How bold and italic work on Bluesky
Bluesky has no formatting buttons and does not read Markdown, so **text** and _text_ show up exactly as you typed them. A post is plain text plus three kinds of links: mentions, web links and hashtags. This tool swaps each letter for a lookalike Unicode character, mostly from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, so ๐ is a different character from B rather than a bold B. Because the result is ordinary text, the styling shows in the Bluesky app on any device and survives copy and paste. Accented letters and other alphabets mostly stay plain, because Unicode has no styled versions of them; strikethrough and underline work on any letter.
Keep handles, hashtags and links plain
Bluesky finds @handles, #hashtags and links by reading plain letters. A styled @handle is not a mention, so nobody is notified, and #๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐๐ฌ๐ค๐ฒ is made of different characters from #Bluesky, so people following that tag will not see your post. Style the words around them and type handles, tags and links normally.
Bluesky's 300-character limit
A Bluesky post holds 300 characters, counted as you see them (graphemes), so a styled letter counts as one, just like a plain one. Struck-through and underlined letters count as one each too. Many counters show a styled letter as two, because it takes two units in a JavaScript string; the counter on this page counts the way Bluesky does and warns you when you go over 300.
Search and screen readers
Styled letters are different characters, so a search for growth may not find ๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ก, and screen readers such as VoiceOver and TalkBack may spell a styled word out letter by letter or skip it. Use styling for a few words of emphasis, keep the words you want people to find in plain text, and never put information people need only in styled letters.
Where styled text works well on Bluesky
Your display name and bio, the opening line of a post or thread, a short label such as ๐๐๐ฐ or ๐๐ฉ๐๐๐ญ๐, and a word of emphasis in a reply. Pick a style from the list above, copy it, and paste it into Bluesky on your phone or computer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Bluesky support bold or italic text?
Not natively. Bluesky has no formatting options and shows Markdown symbols such as ** as typed. Bold and italic text on Bluesky is made of Unicode characters that look bold or italic, which is what this tool produces.
Do styled letters count against the 300-character limit?
Yes, one each, the same as a plain letter. Bluesky counts graphemes (characters as you see them), and so does the counter on this page.
Will a styled hashtag or @mention still work?
No. A styled @handle is not a mention and notifies nobody, and a styled hashtag is made of different characters from the plain tag, so people following the plain tag will not see it. Keep them plain and style the words around them.
Can screen readers read styled text?
Not reliably. VoiceOver, TalkBack and NVDA may read each styled letter by its Unicode name or skip it. Keep important information in plain text and use styling for short emphasis.
Why do some styles show up as boxes?
A device whose fonts lack a character shows an empty box in its place. Bold, italic and the other letter styles display on almost every phone and computer; squared letters depend more on the device, so check your post once it is published.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in your phone's browser, type your text, tap Copy next to the style you want, and paste it into the Bluesky app.
