A YouTube Short can be up to 3 minutes long. YouTube counts any square or vertical video of 3 minutes or less as a Short, if it was uploaded on or after 15 October 2024. The catch sits at one minute: YouTube’s help pages now disagree on whether a Short over one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked worldwide or stays playable. Wider videos, and longer ones, are treated as regular long-form uploads.
Key Takeaways
- Maximum: 3 minutes, in a square or vertical frame, uploaded from the YouTube app or YouTube Studio.
- Start date: the 3-minute rule covers uploads from 15 October 2024 on most channels, and from 8 December 2025 on Official Artist Channels.
- Older uploads: a vertical video of 1 to 3 minutes uploaded before that date stays a long-form video.
- The one-minute line: one YouTube help page says a Short over one minute with any active copyright claim is blocked globally; another says such Shorts are no longer automatically blocked and may remain playable.
- Music: most tracks from the Shorts audio library can run for 90 seconds of a 3-minute Short; some stop at 60 or 30 seconds.
YouTube Shorts length rules at a glance
Every row comes from YouTube’s own help pages, read in October and November 2026.
| Rule | |
|---|---|
| Maximum length | 3 minutes |
| Frame | Square or vertical; a wider ratio such as 16:9 makes a long-form video |
| Counts from | Uploads on or after 15 October 2024 (Official Artist Channels: 8 December 2025) |
| Older vertical videos of 1 to 3 minutes | Stay long-form |
| Over 1 minute with a copyright claim | Blocked globally per the three-minute Shorts page; “will no longer be automatically blocked” per the Create Shorts page for Android |
| Under 1 minute | No new limits |
| Music from the Shorts audio library | Most songs up to 90 seconds; some 60 or 30 |
| Uploading from a computer | YouTube Studio, up to 15 short videos at a time |
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Up to 3 minutes. YouTube’s help page on three-minute Shorts says any video uploaded on or after 15 October 2024 “with a square or vertical aspect ratio up to three minutes in length will be categorized as Shorts”. Length and shape decide. You can upload one from the YouTube app, film one with the Shorts camera, or upload it in YouTube Studio.
That also means you cannot make a 4-minute vertical Short. Past 3 minutes the same file becomes a regular video, watched in the main player rather than the Shorts feed.
The old answer, 60 seconds, still turns up in guides and in tools written before October 2024. If a page tells you Shorts stop at a minute, check its date.
What happens to a Short longer than one minute?
It plays like any other Short, unless it carries a copyright claim, and there YouTube’s own pages disagree. The three-minute Shorts page says: “Any Short that is over one minute in duration with an active copyright claim of any type, including manual claims, will be blocked globally on YouTube.” A blocked Short cannot be played, is not recommended and earns nothing.
YouTube’s Create YouTube Shorts page for Android phones and tablets, read in November 2026, says the opposite: “Shorts longer than one minute with an active copyright claim will no longer be automatically blocked and may remain playable on YouTube.” It links back to the three-minute page, which still says they are blocked. Until the two agree, treat a claim on a Short over a minute as a risk to playback and earnings.
YouTube adds that “there are no penalties to your channel”, and that “there are no changes in limitations for Shorts that are less than one minute in length”. To unblock one, remove the claimed content or dispute the claim. Once the claim is resolved, the Short plays and can be monetized again.
Length guides often leave out this copyright catch. The extra two minutes are safe for your own footage and audio. They are risky for anything built on someone else’s music or clips.
Which music can you use in a 3-minute Short?
Songs from the Shorts audio library, within the time each track allows. YouTube says “you can use most songs for up to 90 seconds in a 3 minute Short”, while “some tracks may be limited to 60 or 30 seconds”. Royalty-free tracks from the YouTube Audio Library in Studio do not receive a Content ID claim, so they avoid the one-minute problem.
The practical split is simple. If the Short needs a commercial track for its full length, keep the Short under a minute. If it runs longer, use your own audio, the audio library within its time limit, or royalty-free music.
Do old vertical videos count as Shorts?
No. A square or vertical video of 1 to 3 minutes uploaded before 15 October 2024 “will remain the same, as a long-form video”, and keeps earning in the long-form model. Only uploads from that date on are sorted into Shorts.
Official Artist Channels moved later. For them the date is 8 December 2025: earlier uploads of that shape stay long-form, and later ones are Shorts.
If you want an old video in the Shorts feed, you would need to upload it again, within 3 minutes.
How do you stop a video from becoming a Short?
Make it wider than it is tall. YouTube’s help page says that if you “don’t want your content to be classified as Shorts, use a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9 for long-form videos”. A square video under 3 minutes counts as a Short, so a square clip meant for the main player needs a 16:9 frame.
This matters for trailers, product clips and anything you want to sit in a playlist or on a website embed in landscape. Export those at 16:9 and they stay out of the Shorts feed whatever their length. For clips that should be Shorts, the export sizes and the Shorts thumbnail are in our guide to YouTube Shorts dimensions.
How long should a YouTube Short be?
YouTube’s help pages we read set no ideal length, only the 3-minute ceiling. Our view is that length should follow the idea and the audio rights, not the limit. A three-minute Short is room for a full recipe, a short tutorial or a story with a setup and a payoff. A one-line joke stays short.
The rule worth planning around is the one-minute line. Plan two kinds of Short: under a minute when you use music or clips you do not own, and up to 3 minutes when the footage and sound are yours.
TikTok sets its limits differently: every account can post 3 minutes and some get 10, as our guide to how long TikTok videos can be explains. Instagram Reels follow their own frame rules, covered in our guide to Instagram Reel size.
How do you plan and schedule Shorts?
A Short is uploaded like any other video, so scheduling one means choosing Schedule on the visibility step in YouTube Studio or the app, then a date, time and time zone. YouTube’s help page on scheduling covers both, though it does not single out Shorts.
Our guide to scheduling YouTube Shorts walks through it, including how to move a scheduled Short.
Before you upload, write the description with the hashtags in mind. YouTube shows up to 3 hashtags from the description by the title, and ignores every hashtag on a video that has more than 60. The YouTube hashtag generator page has a free hashtag checker that runs in your browser; generating suggestions needs a PostNext account. A Short’s title holds 100 characters, the same as any video’s, and our guide to YouTube title, description and tag limits shows how YouTube counts the description and tags.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can YouTube Shorts be longer than 60 seconds?
Yes. Since 15 October 2024, square or vertical videos of up to 3 minutes count as Shorts. Past one minute, an active copyright claim puts the Short at risk: one YouTube help page says it is blocked worldwide, another says it may stay playable. Keep claimed music or clips to Shorts under a minute.
What is the maximum length of a YouTube Short?
Three minutes. A square or vertical video of 3 minutes or less, uploaded on or after 15 October 2024, is categorized as a Short. Anything longer, or wider, is a regular long-form video.
Why was my YouTube Short blocked?
One known cause is an active copyright claim on a Short over one minute, including a manual claim and including music. YouTube’s three-minute Shorts page says such Shorts are blocked worldwide, although another help page says they are no longer blocked automatically. YouTube does not penalize the channel. Remove the claimed content or dispute the claim, and the Short plays again once the claim is resolved.
Is there a minimum length for YouTube Shorts?
YouTube’s help pages on Shorts that we read give only a maximum, 3 minutes, and no minimum length. YouTube says nothing changed for Shorts under a minute.
Do vertical videos uploaded before October 2024 count as Shorts?
No. A square or vertical video of 1 to 3 minutes uploaded before 15 October 2024 stays a long-form video and keeps long-form monetization. For Official Artist Channels the cut-off date is 8 December 2025.
