How to Add Music to Instagram Post

Reels, Stories, and even single photos can carry licensed music — but business and personal accounts see different music libraries, and the workarounds matter.

The exact steps per format

Music for Reels, Stories, and photos

Instagram supports music in three formats with different flows. For Reels, tap the music note when creating, search the library, and select a clip. For Stories, use the music sticker on a finished story slide. For single feed photos, the music feature is the same sticker — added during the editing step before posting. All three flows use the same underlying music library.

Personal vs business licensing

Why business accounts see less music

Personal accounts have access to Instagram's full consumer music library — millions of tracks licensed for personal use. Business accounts and Creator accounts see only the commercial music library, which is smaller and licensed for commercial use. The licensing distinction matters legally — using consumer-only tracks on a business account can result in the audio being muted or the post removed.

Workarounds for missing tracks

Not every song is in Instagram's library, and tracks can disappear if licensing changes. When a specific track is unavailable, the practical workarounds — use a similar instrumental, use the original audio from a Reel you can save and reshare, or upload your own original audio (becomes available for others to use too). Pirated audio extraction tools risk account ban and never work reliably.

1

Pick the format that supports music

Reels, Stories, and single-photo feed posts all support music. Carousels with multiple photos do NOT support music at the post level (you can add music per photo via Stories shared later but not on the carousel itself). Pick the format that supports your music need.
2

Tap the music sticker or music icon during editing

Reels — music note in the create flow. Stories — sticker menu, music sticker. Single photos — sticker menu during edit. The sticker opens the music library where you can search, browse trending, or paste a URL from a track you saved earlier.
3

Trim the clip to the right moment of the song

Most music clips on Instagram are 15-30 seconds. Use the trim slider to select the moment of the song that matches your visual — often the chorus or hook. The wrong 15-second cut of a great song lands flat; the right cut makes the post.
4

Verify rights before posting on a business account

If you are on a Business or Creator account, double-check the track is from the commercial library. Consumer-only tracks may post initially but get muted or removed within hours. The visual cue — if the track appears in your library when on a business account, it is commercial-licensed.

Instagram music FAQ

Quick answers on adding music, licensing rules, and what to do when a track is missing.

How do I add music to an Instagram post?

For Reels, tap the music note during creation. For Stories, use the music sticker on the slide. For single feed photos, the music sticker is available during editing. Carousels with multiple photos do not support music at the post level — only individual formats do.

Can I add music to a regular Instagram photo post?

Yes — single feed photos support the music sticker during editing. Carousels with multiple photos do not. The feature rolled out in 2024 and works the same as the Stories music sticker. Tap the sticker icon during edit, choose music, select the clip.

Why can I not add music to my Instagram post?

Most likely you are on a Business or Creator account and the track is consumer-only-licensed. Switch to Personal account temporarily to access the full library, or pick a different track. Other causes — older app version (update Instagram), or the post is a carousel (no carousel music support).

How do I add music to an Instagram carousel?

You cannot — Instagram does not support music on carousel posts (multi-photo). The workaround is to share individual photos as single-photo posts (with music each) or restructure as a Reel that combines the photos into a single video with music throughout.

Can businesses add any music to Instagram?

No — business and Creator accounts can only use tracks from Instagram's commercial-licensed music library. The library is smaller than the personal-account library. Using consumer-only tracks on a business account risks the audio being muted, the post being removed, or in repeat cases account warnings.

How long can music be on an Instagram post?

For Reels, music can play for the entire Reel duration up to 90 seconds. For Stories, music plays for the story duration (max 60 seconds per slide). For single feed photos, music plays for 30 seconds (the photo loops with music for that duration).

Can I add my own music to Instagram?

Yes for Reels — upload your own original audio when creating the Reel. The audio becomes available for other users to use too (which is how original audio goes viral). For Stories and feed photos, the music sticker only pulls from Instagram's library — you cannot upload custom audio for those formats.

Why is music missing on my Instagram?

Three common causes. Account is set to Business or Creator (restricted library). App version is outdated (update). Region restrictions (some tracks are licensed only in specific countries). Try switching to Personal account, updating Instagram, or picking a different track to isolate the cause.
