What an Instagram username can and cannot contain

A username is up to 30 characters and may contain letters, numbers, periods and underscores. No spaces, no other symbols, and it is not case sensitive, so name, Name and NAME are the same handle. Two names that differ only by a period or underscore are different handles, which is why dotted variants of a taken name are often free. You can change your username as often as you like, and Instagram holds your old one for 14 days so you can switch back before anyone else can take it.

Instagram does not have a public form for claiming a username from an inactive account. If the name matches a trademark you own and the account is impersonating your brand, you can report it through Meta's intellectual property process. That can get the infringing account removed; it does not hand you the name. Otherwise the practical answers are variants: add a period or underscore, prefix with a role or a place, or use the brand name plus the product category. List five to ten names under 30 characters using letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Shorter is better: names under 15 characters are easier to say, type and print. Avoid numbers that look like a year unless they mean something.
